New Power Generation Project in Oklahoma

A pioneering power generation initiative is underway in Oklahoma, marking a significant advancement in energy production. The Grand River Dam Authority (GRDA) is celebrating the launch of a new natural gas unit at its Grand River Energy Center in Choteau, which is projected to add nearly 500 megawatts to the power supply.
Increased Energy Demand
With the rising demand for electricity—particularly from data centers and large companies—this project is crucial. After six years of meticulous planning, GRDA is poised for a transformative phase in power generation. Vice President John Wiscaver notes the importance of keeping an older unit operational, adding, “This allows us to keep that unit generating for several more years, which adds additional 500MW to the overall grid.”
In light of a particularly hot summer and the impending winter months, ensuring reliable energy supply is a top priority. Wiscaver emphasizes that providing affordable and dependable energy is beneficial for all customers.
Extending the Life of Coal-Fired Unit
In addition to the new unit, GRDA is also focusing on extending the life of an existing coal-fired unit, supported by a $28.5 million federal grant. Assistant Secretary Catherine Jereza from the U.S. Department of Energy visited the facility this summer to witness these advancements.
Future Energy Needs
The new unit represents just one component of GRDA’s diverse energy portfolio, which also includes hydro, wind generation, and plans for battery storage. Wiscaver states, “We’re always looking at the future on what those needs are going to be…and we anticipate they’re not going to get less.” To meet anticipated demands, GRDA will continue to invest in growth strategies.
The new unit is set to officially begin supplying electricity on September 16.
This initiative marks a significant step in addressing Oklahoma’s growing energy needs while balancing traditional and modern energy sources.
