Energy Transfer’s Distributions Are Fully Secured. Here’s Why This is More Important Than the Yield.

Overview of Energy Transfer (ET)

Energy Transfer operates over 140,000 miles of pipeline across 44 states and offers a forward yield of 6.3%. Despite the high yield appearing risky, its robust cash flow ensures the sustainability of its distributions, making it an attractive income investment.

How Energy Transfer Covers Its Distributions

As a midstream pipeline operator, Energy Transfer generates revenue by charging “tolls” to transport natural gas, crude oil, and other resources. This model is resilient against commodity price fluctuations, sustaining profits and distributable cash flow (DCF) as long as resources continue flowing.

The company faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to reduced distributions in 2020 and 2021, but has since increased them as the business normalized.

Key Financial Metrics

Metric (Billions) 2020 2021 2022 2023 2024 2025 1H 2026
DCF $5.74 $8.22 $7.45 $7.58 $8.36 $8.21 $5.29
Distributions $2.47 $1.78 $3.09 $3.99 $4.39 $4.56 $2.32

Energy Transfer usually allocates around 50% of its DCF to distributions. For instance, in the first half of 2026, it covered its $2.32 billion in distributions with $5.29 billion in DCF, resulting in a coverage ratio of 2.28x. The company targets an annual distribution increase of 3%-5% while maintaining a coverage ratio near 2x.

Structure of Energy Transfer

Energy Transfer operates as a master limited partnership (MLP), meaning investors hold units instead of shares, resulting in tax-efficient distributions. Only the income portion of the distribution is taxed annually, although investors must file a K-1 form with the IRS.

Despite a decline in unit value on distribution days, Energy Transfer invests remaining cash into expanding its infrastructure, thereby growing the business’s fundamental value. This combination of high distributions and ongoing growth makes it a promising income investment.
