The Big Ten Conference is enhancing its replay review process during football broadcasts, effective this week. This upgrade will allow viewers to hear live audio between referees and replay officials, along with video footage of the plays being reviewed. Additionally, fans will get a glimpse inside the Big Ten’s replay center.
Initially, these enhanced reviews were set for Friday night games, but the scope has expanded to include all conference games and home non-conference games overseen by Big Ten officials.
This decision follows controversy over a game between Michigan and Western Michigan, where a last-second Hail Mary pass was allowed. A replay showed the game clock expiring before the play concluded, raising questions about the accuracy of the timekeeping. NBC clarified that their replay feed is not the official source for game time, placing the responsibility on the Big Ten.
After reviewing the situation, the Big Ten affirmed the original call was correct, asserting that the game clock showed one second remaining. This situation has prompted Western Michigan, part of the Mid-American Conference, to appeal the game’s outcome.
Additionally, Notre Dame’s strong defense and star quarterback, C.J. Carr, position them as contenders for the national championship, according to analyst Nicole Auerbach.
