The Bald Head Island Conservancy (BHIC) in Brunswick County, N.C., has received a significant federal grant of $424,582 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to enhance coastal conservation training for local students. This three-year grant, effective from September 1, 2026, to August 31, 2029, aims to build on existing internship and fellowship programs.
The funding will support various educational initiatives, including:
- 75 high school students participating in foundational STEM and leadership volunteer activities.
- 44 undergraduate interns taking part in residential summer and fall environmental programs.
- 12 post-baccalaureate technicians in advanced nine-month positions.
- Three graduate student fellows conducting research on applied coastal sustainability.
Additionally, BHIC plans to launch “Sea Turtle Scientists in Training,” a collaboration with Brunswick Community College, aimed at providing biology students with hands-on field research and data analysis experience. The first cohorts are set to begin in 2027, focusing on expanding access for students from coastal and rural areas with geographic and financial challenges.
Dr. Jennifer Wiggen, BHIC’s Director of Education & Engagement, emphasized the importance of this funding in fostering the next generation of environmental educators and scientists.
