Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy and Minister of Culture Tetiana Berezhna recently met with Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos to discuss sanctions against Russian content and ways to support Ukraine. The conversation highlighted the need to restrict the distribution of the Russian propaganda animated series “Masha and the Bear.”
Berezhna recalled President Volodymyr Zelensky’s August decision to impose sanctions on the creators and distributors of the series, adding that they had requested international streaming platforms to remove the Ukrainian adaptation. Sarandos confirmed that the Ukrainian version is currently unavailable to Netflix users globally.
The meeting also addressed Ukraine’s potential as a future film production hub within Central and Eastern Europe, with Berezhna advocating for collaborations with Netflix in this area. She underscored Ukraine’s skilled professionals and infrastructure as assets for building a competitive audiovisual industry.
Additionally, Berezhna expressed gratitude to Netflix for its support of Ukrainian professionals and its decision to cease operations in Russia following the start of the full-scale war.
