Nestled at 2606 W. Loop 281 in Longview, Oak Hill Automotive may go unnoticed to those passing by due to its lack of signage. However, a glance through the large windows reveals a paradise for Volkswagen enthusiasts, showcasing an array of Beetles and parts that evoke nostalgia.
For over 50 years, Oak Hill Automotive has served as a sanctuary for classic Volkswagen owners. The family-owned business specializes in older models, ensuring these beloved cars remain roadworthy. Daniel Watts, the second-generation owner, admits he has no plans to exit the business anytime soon.
A Family Affair
Daniel’s passion for Volkswagens began early in life, influenced by his father, Clarke. Clarke, at 87, has witnessed the evolution of the Beetle since its debut in the U.S. in 1949. He learned to fix them as a teenager, eventually opening his own shop. His journey led the family to East Texas, where the love for Volkswagens became a business.
The garage, seemingly chaotic with parts and tools, is a treasure trove for restoration. Daniel himself owns several Beetles, complemented by a salvage lot filled with nearly 400 cars. This vast inventory provides essential parts for repairs and restorations, all thanks to Clarke’s invaluable expertise.
Racing History
The Watts family also embraced the racing scene with their Volkswagens, often outperforming cars with more powerful engines at local dirt tracks. Daniel later transitioned to drag racing, a passion he shares with his father, who retired from racing only recently.
Their dedication to the VW community extends beyond business. Daniel describes it as a family where deep relationships foster a sense of belonging among enthusiasts.
The Future of Oak Hill
Despite the increase in internet shopping, Oak Hill remains steadfast. Daniel stresses the importance of personalized service and expert advice that online platforms cannot replicate. As interest in classic Volkswagens wanes among younger generations, the shop continues to thrive based on nostalgia and personal connections.
