Grade 10 Selection Process Update
The Ministry of Education (MoE) has launched the Grade 10 selection portal, reducing school choices for approximately 1.2 million Grade 9 learners from 12 to 8 options this year.
Key Details:
- Selection Pathways: Learners can now select from three pathways: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), Social Sciences, and Arts and Sports Science, along with their preferred senior schools.
- Timeline: The selection portal opened on September 7 and will close on September 11, coinciding with the release of KJSEA results in December, when placement will be finalized for transitions to Grade 10 in January.
Selection Structure:
- Each learner can choose:
- 3 C1 schools (top tier)
- 2 C2 schools
- 2 C3 schools
- 1 C4 school
This structure replaces last year’s four-selection arrangement.
STEM Pathway Subjects:
Learners can choose subjects such as Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Studies, and Agriculture, with pathways outlined for various career orientations.
Social Sciences and Arts Pathways:
- Social Sciences: Includes subjects like Business Studies and Geography.
- Arts and Sports Science: Offers combinations in Fine Arts, Music, Dance, and Sports and Recreation.
Common Requirements:
All senior school learners will study seven subjects, with four being mandatory: English, Kiswahili/Kenyan Sign Language, Mathematics, and Community Service Learning.
Role of Parents:
Parents are advised to review schools’ offerings before selections and ensure they are aware of whether institutions are boarding or day schools. The portal has features that allow verification of selections.
Technical Support:
Any issues with the selection portal or related systems must be reported to the relevant educational authorities before the deadline.
Final Steps:
Post-selection, Heads of Institutions will prepare a signed learner profile to confirm choices. Guidance will be provided to ensure learners’ selections align with their academic and career aspirations.
