México en el Corazón: A Celebration of Mexican Heritage
On Saturday night, the Long Center for the Performing Arts buzzed with energy as nearly every seat filled with members of the Greater Lafayette community. They gathered to witness México en el Corazón, a vibrant performance by a traveling theater group showcasing traditional Mexican song and dance across the U.S. and Canada.
Connecting Cultures
As part of the North American Institute for Mexican Advancement (NAIMA), the creators emphasized the event’s purpose: to help Mexican-Americans reconnect with their roots and offer an opportunity for the American audience to delve into the richness of Mexican culture.
Sergio Suárez, NAIMA’s president and CEO, spoke about the generational aspect of cultural transmission. “It’s about grandparents and parents passing our culture on to children and grandchildren. Just looking at the children here, I feel that our culture lives on,” he shared in an interview conducted in Spanish.
A Rich Cultural Experience
The performance included a wide array of Mexican cultural expressions—from the colorful folkloric dances of Jalisco to mariachi melodies from various regions. Maki Teramoto, the Head Consul at the Mexican consulate in Indianapolis, highlighted the importance of such events in showcasing the diversity that Latino communities contribute to Indiana’s social fabric.
Attendees experienced cultural immersion that provided an escape from everyday stress. Marco Dominguez, a local Latino community member, expressed his appreciation for the dedication of the performers, stating, “To have two hours being out of the whole mess meant a lot.”
Addressing Community Concerns
In light of the recent cancellation of the Lafayette Latino Festival due to ICE activities, speakers at the event, including Teramoto and Suárez, emphasized the importance of cultural showcases to illuminate the contributions of Mexican-American immigrants.
“In these times when so much is happening…the entire community lives in fear,” Suárez stated. He hopes that these cultural events can foster understanding and bring people together, transcending borders through art and music.
