This blog post highlights several significant milestones in the Curiosity rover’s journey on Mars.

Elevation Achievement

Curiosity has achieved a remarkable elevation gain, surpassing 1 kilometer above its landing site in Gale Crater. For context, this is a significant achievement compared to earlier rovers; Spirit’s ascent to Husband Hill in 2005 was only 106 meters.

Celebrating 5,000 Sols

On August 29, Curiosity marked 5,000 Martian days (sols) since its landing, equivalent to over 5,137 Earth days. This milestone is a testament to the hard work of the engineers and scientists behind the mission.

Exploring Chocolatal

Curiosity is currently examining a wind-formed ripple named “Chocolatal.” This feature is under scrutiny to determine if it can be classified as a transverse aeolian ridge (TAR). The focus here is on its composition, grain sizes, formation processes, and whether it is active or stable.

Science Activities

Throughout the week, several scientific observations and analyses were conducted. Highlights include:

  • In-situ examinations of light-toned bedrock along Curiosity’s path.
  • Chemical analyses of dark-toned rocks via the ChemCam Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS).
  • Imaging of various rock formations and sand ripples.

Later in the week, the rover positioned itself to conduct contact science within the ripple, with plans for high-resolution images and measurements of layering and grain variations.

A Tribute to Paul Geissler

Final mosaics of the trench wall are dedicated to the memory of Paul Geissler, an expert on Martian TARs who passed away earlier in the year.

The week concluded with planned scientific investigations on the features of Chocolatal and a series of atmospheric measurements, reflecting on 5,000 sols of achievements, with excitement for what the next 5,000 sols will bring.
