China is advancing its Tianwen 3 Mars sample return mission, aiming to return approximately 500 grams (17.6 ounces) of Martian material by 2031. The mission, managed by the China National Space Administration (CNSA), includes a lander, ascender, service capsule, orbiter, and an Earth reentry module.
If all goes as planned, Tianwen 3 will launch in 2028 using two Long March 5 heavy-lift rockets from Hainan. Chief scientist Hou Zengqian highlighted the successful progress and collaboration of scientific teams in developing prototypes and addressing technical challenges.
While NASA’s Mars sample return plans are currently uncertain, some experts believe China’s progress represents a significant “Sputnik moment” in space exploration. The Tianwen 3 mission aims to find microbial traces potentially similar to early forms of life on Earth and other unknown forms of Martian life, stating that the returned samples will hold invaluable scientific significance regardless of whether life is found.
The mission’s success relies on selecting an appropriate landing site, with finalization expected by 2026. Key challenges include planetary protection and identifying biosignatures. Additionally, China is building a planetary protection laboratory to ensure safe handling of Martian samples, adhering to international contamination prevention guidelines.
