The Chelan County Commissioners are urging Washington’s Congressional delegation to support measures aimed at enhancing wildfire protection. During a meeting on September 8, they approved a letter to Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, and Representative Kim Schrier, advocating for proactive forest management to mitigate wildfire severity and its impacts.
The letter highlights that approximately 80% of Chelan County consists of federally-owned land, predominantly managed by the U.S. Forest Service. It calls for increased investment in processes such as removing excess smaller trees, clearing underbrush, and implementing prescribed burns. The commissioners stress the importance of bolstering firefighting capabilities by expanding air assets and personnel to enable rapid response during initial fire outbreaks.
Post-fire restoration is also a focus, as the letter emphasizes the need for swift removal of hazardous debris and replanting to foster resilient landscapes. The commissioners note the risks of flooding and landslides associated with burn scars, underscoring the urgency for intervention to break the cycle of severe wildfires.
Though acknowledging the significant financial commitment required, they urge Congress to act on these recommendations, warning of ongoing negative effects on communities and the local economy without such measures.
