The Kankakee Public Library is set to unveil its newly redesigned Reading Garden on Thursday, September 10, at 7 p.m. This event will feature a custom mural that celebrates native plants and the library’s core values.
The renovation transformed an underutilized outdoor space into a vibrant community area, complete with landscaping, a grass archway at the entrance, and a custom lighted sign. A team of library artists created the mural, incorporating designs submitted by young patrons, with contributions from artists Mary Bass, Esther Lam, and Brittney Lane, as well as support from library staff.
Clara Hall, from the City’s ESU/Department of Public Works, led the beautification project with the assistance of city staff and Kankakee High School students.
The ribbon-cutting celebration is free and welcomes attendees of all ages. It will include live entertainment, with food vendors like Mac’s BBQ and H20 Limonata available for purchase. The project received support from the Illinois Arts Council.
