Isar Aerospace Reaches Orbit with Spectrum Rocket
Isar Aerospace, a German startup, made history by becoming the first European Launcher Challenge (ELC) startup to successfully reach orbit. The Spectrum rocket lifted off from Norway’s Andøya spaceport at 4:12 PM ET on September 30, completing its flight successfully after a prior failed attempt in 2022.
CEO Daniel Metzler emphasized the significance of this achievement for Europe’s access to space, stating, “From today on, there is a true alternative for commercial and institutional customers.” The two-stage Spectrum rocket, fueled by liquid oxygen and propane, successfully delivered six payloads, including cubesats from various academic institutions.
Isar plans to differentiate itself in the market by conducting repeated launches and is currently producing five additional Spectrum rockets. The company has also signed an agreement to potentially launch from Canada’s Spaceport Nova Scotia.
The ELC’s funding structure includes requirements for early-stage startups to reach orbit by 2027 and to develop an upgraded launch vehicle by 2028, both of which Isar is on track to meet. The company is also investing in reusable rocket technologies for its future.
As Isar Aerospace expands, it joins a competitive field of European launch providers working towards increasing capacity and access to space.
