EU aims to calm Trump-influenced Greenland by offering a new partnership and investment opportunity.

The European Union (EU) has promised significant financial support to Greenland in response to concerns raised by U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats regarding the territory. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a commitment of €200 million (approximately $232 million) over the next two years to assist Greenland in addressing climate change, improving internet connectivity, and enhancing infrastructure such as hydropower plants, fisheries, and education.

This support comes as the EU strengthens its diplomatic ties with Greenland amid rising tensions stemming from Trump’s insistence on U.S. control over the island for security purposes. Von der Leyen emphasized that the future of Greenland is a matter for its people and Denmark to decide, reaffirming principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty in international law.

In addition to immediate investment, von der Leyen indicated plans to double EU budget support for Greenland to about €500 million ($580 million) starting in 2028. The partnership aims to tackle various challenges, including housing, small business support, and sustainable tourism.

Denmark’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen described the EU as a “loyal and trusted friend,” highlighting the importance of support during these challenging times. The EU’s commitment has also been a response to political pressures from the Trump administration, which notably affected Denmark and other European allies. Recently, military personnel from 11 NATO countries participated in exercises in Greenland, further showcasing international support for the territory’s sovereignty amidst the geopolitical context.
