Archaeologists have uncovered a remarkable mosaic at the ancient Roman city of Adramytteion in Turkey, believed to be from 1,800 years ago. The vibrant work, which measures about 16 by 12 feet, features 15 panels adorned with various animals and mythical figures, with a special highlight on two named pets: a dog named Ocean and a cat named Emerald. These animals are strategically placed near the entrance of the villa’s main reception hall, suggesting their significance as both status symbols and tributes to beloved pets.
The mosaic includes imagery of birds, fish, wild animals, and characters like Medusa and Pegasus, crafted from a rich selection of marble and glass. While Ocean’s name might reference the nearby Aegean Sea, Emerald’s name may link back to Roman Egypt, known for its emerald mines. This captivating find will be featured in the Journal of Mosaic Research, showcasing a blend of artistry and personal homage in ancient Roman culture.
