Chinese scientists have proposed a novel idea: utilizing abandoned coal mine tunnels for “underground agriculture” as part of a green economy initiative. Researchers from Shanxi Province outlined this concept in China Mining Magazine, emphasizing the advantages of these sheltered environments—15,000 of which are expected to close by 2030.
The team suggests that existing infrastructure like tunnels, power grids, and water systems could be adapted for agricultural purposes. They highlight the potential of “closed-environment farming” to counter the challenges posed by climate change on traditional agriculture. Their research evaluates critical factors such as light, temperature, and water to determine the viability of farming in these subterranean spaces.
