Hyundai is set to begin construction on a $5.8 billion steel mill in Ascension Parish, Louisiana, which is projected to create around 5,400 jobs—1,300 permanent and 4,100 indirect. The facility will produce 2.8 million metric tons of ultra-low-carbon, automotive-grade steel annually, supporting both Hyundai Motor Group and other American automakers.
Governor Jeff Landry highlighted that this initiative is part of a broader economic development strategy, which has attracted over $250 billion in new capital investment to Louisiana. He emphasized the state’s resources, including energy and infrastructure, as well as its workforce.
The project is pending a final air pollution permit from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality. The steel mill is expected to begin operations in 2029, strengthening the domestic supply chain and reducing dependence on imported materials.
