Tennessee Grants First National License for ‘Stellarator’ Machine, Bringing Fusion Power Closer to Reality

The pursuit of nuclear fusion as a near-infinite energy source has recently gained momentum in the U.S., with Tennessee making significant strides by issuing the first-ever license for a nuclear fusion power plant to Type One Energy. The company aims to establish a fusion power plant near Knoxville by 2034, starting with a prototype to advance research in the field.

Tennessee was the first state to create regulations for nuclear fusion in June 2023, following a delegation of authority by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. According to the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, fusion machines are defined as those capable of transforming atomic nuclei through fusion processes.

Fusion offers a cleaner alternative to the fission-driven nuclear power plants currently in operation, posing fewer safety risks and producing less long-lived radioactive waste. However, it is important to recognize that fusion also has its challenges, including safety, financial considerations, and indirect weapons risks. Despite these challenges, supporters believe fusion could help meet the increasing energy demands from sources like data centers.

Type One Energy, founded in 2019, plans to build a stellarator capable of producing 400 megawatts of power. The prototype will be located at the closed Bull Run Fossil Plant, in collaboration with the Tennessee Valley Authority, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the University of Tennessee.

As fusion technology continues to evolve, Type One Energy’s plans exemplify the potential for this energy source to contribute to future clean energy solutions.
