- The collar’s acceptance varied, with many owners eventually removing it due to discomfort or its ineffectiveness, and some even disabled the safety features.
Comparison with Past Research
Earlier studies in Australia and England had similar results, showing reduced bird captures with colorful collars (up to 78% in one English study).
Alternative Solutions
Additional research compared collars with other strategies, finding that:
- Switching to a high-meat diet reduced kills by 36%.
- Engaging in daily play reduced kills by 25%.
- Use of bells showed no significant impact, while puzzle feeders were counterproductive.
Broader Context
Despite the promising findings for the collars, they offer only a localized solution to a much larger issue: free-ranging cats in the U.S. kill between 1.3 and 4 billion birds annually, primarily by unowned cats. Therefore, while cat collars serve as a short-term fix, they address only a small portion of the overall problem.
The real challenge will be ensuring the collars remain effective over time and adapting broader strategies for managing cat predation.
