Riverhead Town is moving to acquire the Long Island Science Center’s vacant property at 111 East Main St. for $1.95 million through eminent domain, aiming to boost downtown revitalization. This decision, made unanimous by the town board, follows a Suffolk Supreme Court judge’s approval of the petition to proceed with the acquisition.
The property was once a Swezey’s department store, purchased by the Science Center for $1.45 million in 2020. Plans for renovations included exhibitions and educational spaces but faced delays, prompting concerns from local officials about the project’s viability and impact on revitalization efforts, including a new town square nearby.
As the town prepares to take ownership, Supervisor Jerry Halpin emphasized the importance of finding a suitable developer quickly. The science center has not legally challenged the condemnation, with its president acknowledging the difficulties of contesting eminent domain actions. Local residents have expressed concerns about potential future developments, favoring family-friendly attractions over mixed-use or high-rise buildings.
