Recognizing Service Animals: A Dialogue with the National Service Animals Memorial

September: National Service Dog Month

September celebrates National Service Dog Month, honoring the incredible dogs that assist, protect, and support their handlers daily. A key organization in this mission is the National Service Animals Monument, dedicated to recognizing these remarkable animals.

About the National Service Animals Monument

The National Service Animals Monument will be the first national monument on federal land focusing on working and service animals and their handlers. Approved by Congress in December 2022, it will honor the service and sacrifice of these animals throughout American history, featuring stories from working dogs, assistance animals, and more. The monument is currently in the site selection and fundraising phase, with support from Congress members Jen Kiggans and Don Davis.

Importance of National Service Dog Month

This month emphasizes the vital role assistance dogs play in the lives of those who rely on them. The specialized training these dogs receive is critical for their human partners. It also calls attention to the programs training these dogs and resources available to those in need.

The monument seeks to honor assistance animals and their historical contributions, including guide dogs and military service animals.

Purple Poppy Awards

Now in its fourth year, the Purple Poppy Awards recognize individuals, animals, and organizations that enhance awareness and support for service animals. The purple poppy symbolizes the animals that have lost their lives in military service.

APPA’s Role in the Purple Poppy Awards

APPA proudly sponsors this year’s awards, which take place in Washington for the first time. Their support expands the event’s reach and sends a strong message about the dedication to the National Service Animals Monument Project.
