Louisiana Art and Science Museum Launches Sensory-Friendly Program
Baton Rouge — The Louisiana Art and Science Museum has introduced a sensory-friendly initiative to enhance accessibility for individuals sensitive to lights, sounds, and crowds. This program aims to accommodate visitors who may be on the autism spectrum or experience sensory sensitivities.
Museum president Karen Soniat emphasized the mission to inspire creativity and foster knowledge among all individuals. “Our mission is to inspire creativity, encourage discovery and allow individuals to foster the pursuit of knowledge,” she stated.
Feedback from visitors has been overwhelmingly positive, with families expressing appreciation for the inclusive environment. The Leo family, who attended to support the initiative despite not having a child on the spectrum, highlighted the importance of community participation. “I think everyone wants to be a part of the community and participate however they can, so it’s nice how there is something for everyone,” said Cecilia Leo.
Nicholas Leo noted that the program presents valuable learning opportunities for the wider Baton Rouge community. The family expressed hope that the sensory-friendly concept could be implemented in more local businesses, fostering inclusivity throughout the city. “I would love to see this program be extended to more businesses throughout the city,” Cecilia added.
