India’s space agency, ISRO, has reaffirmed its position as the country’s leading space institution amidst concerns about transferring some activities to private and state-run companies. The organization emphasized its commitment to advanced space research, strategic missions, and core capabilities, stating that it will not be privatized or diminished.
This announcement came after a letter from ISRO’s staff association requested clarity regarding reports about privatising certain functions previously handled by the agency. Since opening the space sector to private participation in 2020, the Indian government has been promoting private sector engagement, with companies increasingly taking on tasks like rocket manufacturing.
ISRO remains central to India’s space ambitions, having successfully conducted missions to Mars and the Moon, and is preparing for its first crewed spaceflight. The agency’s role, according to officials, is not diminishing but evolving to strengthen the overall space ecosystem in India.
