European Day of Jewish Culture: Trieste adopts ‘Love’ as the 2026 theme
Trieste is set to celebrate the 27th European Day of Jewish Culture with a series of events focusing on the history, culture, and values of Judaism, highlighting its integral role in Italian and European heritage. The theme for 2026 is love, encompassing respect for the stranger and a spirit of hospitality.
Key Events Include:
- Guided Tours: Explore the Synagogue of Trieste, one of Europe’s largest, alongside Budapest’s.
- Dialogue Sessions: Engage in discussions that emphasize the shared roots of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
- Public Cultural Events: Participate in activities aimed at enhancing cultural knowledge and fostering community exchange.
Davide Belleri, vice president of the Jewish community in Trieste, emphasized the city’s rich tradition of multiculturalism and interreligious dialogue. While the community feels secure in their faith, he acknowledged the need for ongoing vigilance due to the sensitivity surrounding schools and Jewish institutions. This year’s program aims to further strengthen civil coexistence.
