Bunnings Customer’s Fury After Parking Lot Incident: “I Felt Shocked”

Bunnings Incident Sparks Discussion on Accessible Parking

A recent trip to Bunnings escalated into a heated confrontation over parking as a 4WD towing a jet ski occupied four disabled spaces. Kyle Willmington, a Gold Coast businessman with a rare nerve disease requiring leg braces, expressed his frustration after alerting store staff, only to receive a dismissive response: “What do you want me to do about it?”

Kyle filmed the incident, later sharing it on Instagram, where it gained millions of views. He pointed out that accessible parking is crucial for people with disabilities, and the car’s unlawful occupation illustrated a broader issue of understanding disabilities.

After filming, Kyle moved his vehicle closer to the store entrance, only to be asked by staff to park in a regular space. This inconsistency prompted him to question why action wasn’t taken when he reported the occupied spaces.

The incident ignited an online discussion, with some questioned Kyle’s disability due to his ability to walk. He explained that his condition, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, results in fluctuating abilities, leaving him unable to walk some days and severely fatigued.

Kyle highlighted the need for greater awareness of invisible disabilities and emphasized that accessibility is about more than just wheelchair users. He noted that businesses need to act more quickly to address misuse of accessible parking spaces.

In response, Bunnings apologized and has improved staff training on handling such situations. Kyle hopes this incident will spark a broader awareness of accessibility issues beyond just Bunnings.
