Aurizon Grows Containerised Freight Business
September 7, 2026 — Aurizon, Australia’s largest rail freight company, is expanding its containerised freight operations, playing a crucial role in powering Australian households and the economy.
George Lippiatt, Aurizon’s Group Executive for Bulk and Containerised Freight, highlighted that nearly all household goods can be transported by rail in containers. He noted, “From supermarket products to motor vehicles, our interstate rail services are essential as consumer demand and economic growth rise.”
Last fiscal year, volumes for a long-term contract with TGE (formerly Toll Global Express) increased by over 10%, representing around 45% of Aurizon’s total national containerised freight volume, which also includes volumes from other customers that grew by more than 175%.
Aurizon anticipates breaking even in its Containerised Freight business this year, following strong growth driven by consumer demand. The company recently expanded its offerings with two new contracts to support motor vehicle distribution, utilizing specialized rolling stock.
Key partnerships have formed with NYK, a global roll-on/roll-off shipping leader, and CEVA Logistics, a major finished vehicle provider. CEVA’s long-term contract encompasses all domestic rail operations for motor vehicles and containerised freight.
Additionally, Aurizon has launched its new Kewdale Terminal in Perth, a $60 million facility designed for full-length, double-stacked interstate freight trains, enhancing capacity and efficiency.
This expansion is part of Aurizon’s commitment to support increasing customer demand, driving economic growth across Australia.
