The traditional method for placing defibrillator pads involves positioning one on the upper right chest and the other on the lower left, known as anterior-lateral placement. However, a study by scientists from Oregon Health & Science University published in JAMA Network Open revealed that using an anterior-posterior (front-back) technique may significantly enhance survival rates. The findings indicated that patients with anterior-posterior pad placement had a 2.64-fold higher chance of achieving return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) compared to those using the anterior-lateral method.
Despite these promising results, further research is necessary before changing established protocols, and current guidelines continue to recommend the anterior-lateral placement.
