United Therapeutics Acquires Former Anheuser-Busch Brewery in Merrimack for $47 Million

Biotechnology firm United Therapeutics Corporation has finalized the purchase of the former Anheuser-Busch brewery site in Merrimack for $47 million. This acquisition secures one of Southern New Hampshire’s largest industrial parcels, sprawling nearly 300 acres off Daniel Webster Highway.
The sale follows Anheuser-Busch’s decision to close the long-standing facility at 221 Daniel Webster Highway as part of a nationwide supply chain restructuring.
Key Features of the Site
Positioned between Route 3 and the Merrimack River near the Nashua line, the site includes:
- A large industrial brewing operation
- Distribution hub infrastructure
- Tasting room and beer garden spaces
- Stables for the iconic Budweiser Clydesdales
Historically significant, the brewery had a town valuation of $35 million, generating over $780,000 in local property taxes annually. It also stood as one of Merrimack’s largest municipal wastewater utility users, contributing between $1 million and $1.5 million in annual fees.
Economic Impact
United Therapeutics is expected to create hundreds of high-paying jobs in the region, attracting specialized talent from across the U.S. However, detailed construction plans, architectural designs, and a timeline for redevelopment remain undisclosed.
Founded in 1996 by Martine Rothblatt and based in Silver Spring, Maryland, United Therapeutics focuses on therapies for rare, chronic conditions, particularly Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH). Its commercial products include Tyvaso, Remodulin, and Orenitram.
The company is also a leader in bioengineered organ manufacturing and gene-edited organ transplant technologies, seeking to address the global organ shortage.
This acquisition significantly expands United Therapeutics’ New Hampshire footprint, complementing its existing facility on Commercial Street in Manchester. Despite previously exploring a purchase off Hackett Hill Road near Manchester-Hooksett, the company decided against completing that transaction.
