Lea Salonga has made history as the first Filipina to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a significant recognition in her illustrious career spanning Broadway, music, and film. During the ceremony, she expressed her gratitude and pride for this achievement, reflecting on her journey in an industry where representation was once minimal. Salonga’s acclaimed role in Broadway’s Miss Saigon earned her a Tony Award, and she is also celebrated for being the singing voice of Disney’s Princess Jasmine in Aladdin.
At the unveiling, her friend and Disney colleague Ming-Na Wen shared her support, humorously acknowledging Salonga’s talents. As a Disney Legend since 2011, Salonga has continued to influence the entertainment landscape, performing alongside other Disney Princesses at events like D23.
In her acceptance speech, Salonga thanked those who supported her career and noted the gradual changes in the industry regarding representation, ending with a heartfelt “Maraming maraming salamat,” meaning “thank you very, very much” in Tagalog. The ceremony highlighted not just her achievements but also her pivotal role in paving the way for future artists.
