Astrophotographer Mark Johnston recently showcased stunning images of the sun from his backyard in Scottsdale, Arizona. Captured on August 21, 2026, the high-resolution imagery highlights a series of glowing plasma loops extending high above the sun—a phenomenon known as coronal loop arcades.
Johnston’s two-hour time-lapse footage reveals dynamic plasma movements within these loops as they give rise to “coronal rain,” where materials cool and fall back toward the solar atmosphere along magnetic field lines. Employing specialized hydrogen-alpha solar imaging equipment, Johnston was able to capture these intricate details that usually remain unseen.

Such coronal loops are rare, and capturing them almost side-on at the sun’s edge allowed Johnston to reveal their dramatic arching shapes in extraordinary detail. Johnston expressed his delight, stating, “To see one AND catch it right on the limb AND have it happen on a clear day when I’m home… was a real treat.”
