VW Considers Discontinuing SEAT Brand by 2029 to Prioritize CUPRA

Volkswagen Group is contemplating phasing out its Spanish automotive brand SEAT by the end of 2029 as part of a major restructuring initiative led by CEO Oliver Blume. The restructuring aims to cut operating costs, streamline product lines, and focus on high-margin brands and electric vehicles (EVs).

A confidential report produced with the Boston Consulting Group suggests a gradual integration of SEAT’s products and operations into CUPRA, SEAT’s performance and lifestyle brand. CUPRA will then function as a fully independent brand. Volkswagen is shifting focus towards CUPRA to support its corporate electrification strategy, reflecting changes in market dynamics and consumer demand.

Despite this potential phase-out, Volkswagen has announced that it will continue with some short-term product commitments for SEAT, including updated hybrid versions of popular models like the Ibiza and Arona, slated for release in 2027 and 2029, respectively. Volkswagen reassured that they would uphold existing obligations to current vehicle owners.

Although no final decision has been made regarding SEAT’s future past 2030, this uncertainty has generated pushback from labor representatives. SEAT’s works committee has criticized the potential closure, calling it “unacceptable,” stressing that it would impact the Martorell manufacturing plant near Barcelona, a key site for SEAT’s production.

This evaluation of SEAT is part of a broader restructuring plan aimed at enhancing competitiveness, targeting annual sales of 9 million vehicles and an operating margin of 9% by 2030, amid a reported 20% cost disadvantage compared to global competitors. The plan includes significant workforce reductions and a reduction in the number of models offered by the group.

In localized markets such as Mexico, SEAT has experienced some sales resilience, indicating that while the brand’s future remains uncertain, it retains some operational momentum in specific regions.
