Venice Immersive Marks a Decade of XR Innovation

The Venice Immersive festival, entering its tenth edition, is celebrating its evolution as a major space for new media art without dwelling on past achievements. Counselor Michel Reilhac emphasizes a focus on future developments and recognizes the event as a pivotal moment, marking a new chapter in immersive storytelling.

The festival has transitioned from a modest beginning to a significant presence in the immersive art scene, reflecting the ups and downs of the industry. Despite expectations for a consumer boom in virtual reality headsets, financial support has shifted, with public funding stepping in when private financing decreased.

Counselor Liz Rosenthal highlights the rise of location-based entertainment (LBE), particularly in Asia, where LBE centers are flourishing and offering sophisticated interactive experiences. The festival showcases notable competition projects like “Amsterdam 1652” and “Smithsonian Starstruck,” which enhance engagement through free-roam, multiplayer formats.

Emerging financing models are reshaping production landscapes; collaborations with platforms like Fever provide funding alongside marketing and audience engagement strategies. Immersive projects are diversifying, as seen with the music experience “Bowie: Unseen | Unheard,” which focuses on spatial sound without traditional headsets.

The Venice Immersive 2023 competition features 30 projects, showcasing a broadening ecosystem beyond technology, supported by institutions like the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and B’Tselem. Director Hilde K. Kjøs illustrates the drive for new filmmakers to embrace immersive storytelling with her project “Finding Frida,” marking a step for traditional film institutions into the XR space.

Additionally, high-profile projects featuring talents like Daisy Ridley and Margot Robbie are expected to attract attention, particularly with the introduction of XREAL Aura, lightweight AR smart glasses that aim to revitalize the sluggish headset market. Attendees can explore these innovations during a four-day event facilitated by the Agog XR institute.

Directors like Anthony Geffen emphasize the importance of interactivity in their narratives, asserting that engaging with the medium’s potential can surpass traditional storytelling formats. Industry veteran Peter Flaherty underscores the experimental phase of immersive media, where star power serves as a strategic asset in the development of this emerging art form.

Through these initiatives, Venice Immersive illustrates a vibrant, evolving landscape of immersive storytelling, drawing attention to its potential for narrative innovation and audience engagement.
