The Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8) nations are set to provide further assistance to Ukraine’s energy sector ahead of winter, as announced by First Deputy Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. This support aims to address the immediate needs of Ukraine’s power grid while also enhancing its long-term resilience and integration into the European energy market.
Shmyhal emphasized Ukraine’s experience in maintaining and restoring energy supplies despite ongoing attacks from Russia and expressed willingness to share operational strategies with partners. The NB8, consisting of Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden, has allocated over €918 million ($1 billion) for energy resources and infrastructure repair for Ukraine.
Additionally, the region’s commitment comes amid stalled EU discussions about using frozen Russian sovereign assets to help cover Ukraine’s significant wartime funding gap, estimated at €23.5 billion. Several countries, including Sweden and Poland, are advocating for mechanisms to utilize approximately €200 billion in frozen assets, although Belgium remains opposed due to legal concerns. The EU foreign ministers are expected to discuss this issue further at an upcoming meeting in Ireland.
