Lufkin Designated as Texas Cultural District
LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) – The Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA) has officially designated Lufkin as a Texas Cultural District, a recognition announced by Lufkin Creative.
Sandi Adams, executive director of Lufkin Creative, expressed her enthusiasm: “This designation means so much to me because I have seen firsthand how much creativity, talent, and heart already exists in Lufkin.”
The Lufkin Cultural District is one of four newly approved state cultural districts, joining those in Brownsville, Edinburg, and Galveston. The district’s boundaries include:
- North: Rhodes Avenue
- South: Jackson Avenue and Elsie Street
- West: Angelina Street and the railroad line
- East: Stepped boundary along Second, Third, and Charlton streets
Adams noted that this designation acknowledges the flourishing arts community in Lufkin and will open new avenues for cultural tourism and economic development. Key to this effort is the Cultural District Project funding.
Authorized by House Bill 2208 during the 79th Texas Legislature, cultural districts are special zones that leverage cultural resources to boost economic development.
Lufkin Creative will act as the Cultural District Management Entity (CDME), coordinating between the district, local organizations, and the TCA.
“This is just the beginning,” Adams stated. She emphasized the opportunity to create more for artists, strengthen partnerships, support local businesses, and enhance Lufkin’s vibrancy.
Future plans include supporting artists, pursuing grant opportunities, and developing district marketing strategies. An official proclamation to recognize the Lufkin Cultural District is forthcoming.
