LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT: Iconic rock supergroup The Players set to deliver years of hits in Wytheville

The Players to Perform at Millwald Theatre in Wytheville

WYTHEVILLE, Va. (WDBJ)The Players, a band featuring former members of Chicago, The Doobie Brothers, and Peter Frampton’s band, will be performing at the Millwald Theatre in Wytheville in mid-September.

The group consists of Keith Howland and Jeff Coffey (both ex-Chicago), Rob Arthur (formerly of Peter Frampton’s band), and Ed Toth (of The Doobie Brothers). They came together to form The Players during the COVID era.

“We’re four friends,” Howland mentioned. “Ironically, we’re four guys that were all part of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame bands.”

Expanding Musical Horizons

Howland, who was lead guitarist for Chicago for nearly 30 years, shared that The Players perform a variety of songs from different bands, not just Chicago.

“It’s musically very rewarding because we don’t just play Chicago music,” he explained. “We cover Earth, Wind & Fire, Toto, Foreigner, REO Speedwagon, Styx, and of course, The Doobie Brothers, and Peter Frampton.”

“Essentially, we play all of our favorite songs by our favorite bands from the late ’70s and early ’80s,” Howland added.

Local Ties

Howland’s musical roots trace back to Roanoke, Virginia, where he lived during the mid-’70s. He noted his connections to the area:

“I remember the star on the top of the mountain,” he recalled. “I also attended James Madison University, just up the road in Harrisonburg.”
