Gloria Steinem’s New York City brownstone has served as a significant hub for feminist activism and memorable gatherings throughout its history. Following her recent passing, there’s a strong push to preserve this iconic residence.
Steinem’s home, managed by Gloria’s Foundation, aims to continue its legacy as a site for political engagement. She passed away in the home on September 2, surrounded by loved ones.
In a recent Architectural Digest tour, Steinem reflected on her apartment, which she cherished as a sanctuary and home filled with historic memorabilia.
Her brownstone, located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and expanding over time, has hosted numerous renowned figures, including Alice Walker and Wilma Mankiller. Initially shared with artist Barbara Nessim in 1968, it featured a unique loft space still in use today.
Steinem described the significance of her home as more permanent than love. It contains a cozy living room adorned with personal artwork, including pieces by her mother and a portrayal of Obama’s inauguration. Her bedroom holds meaningful artifacts, including lamps created by women in Afghanistan.
The brownstone also accommodates a guest room for movement workers and features a garden dedicated to Mary Wollstonecraft, symbolizing empowerment for women.
Steinem’s legacy continues through her home, with requests for donations in her memory directed to Gloria’s Foundation to support its preservation.
