Anthropic’s Claude Now Capable of Independently Conducting Scientific Experiments Using Laboratory Tools

Anthropic is introducing a new system that enables AI agents to autonomously control laboratory devices and conduct experiments, a significant advancement in laboratory automation. Traditionally, connecting various laboratory equipment has been challenging due to each instrument using its own proprietary interface, requiring specialized and time-consuming software for integration.

With Anthropic’s Model Hardware Standard, this integration process can be drastically reduced from weeks or months to mere minutes. The system employs a standardized “driver” that allows any programmable device to communicate with the AI, forming a common language for interaction. This innovation is intended to expedite research and experimentation across various domains.

The driver simplifies communication between devices by using basic command language such as “read” or “write,” making it easier for AI agents like Claude to interact with previously unencountered equipment. Users can describe their hardware setups using natural language, creating comprehensive reference files that detail a device’s capabilities and limitations.

Anthropic’s AI agents have shown the ability to conduct experiments in a manner similar to human scientists, exploring and iterating upon experimental settings. However, the integration of AI in real-world hardware management raises safety concerns, prompting Anthropic to initially restrict access to this system to a limited number of partners while developing safety protocols.

If successful, this initiative could broaden the influence of AI beyond software development, affecting various sectors of the economy.
