Microsoft is ending unlimited cloud streaming for Xbox Game Pass subscribers, shifting to a model that imposes monthly caps on streaming hours. This change aligns Xbox Cloud Gaming with similar limits from competitors like Nvidia’s GeForce Now. The announcement, made via an official Xbox Wire blog post, cites increased costs from higher usage as a reason for the shift.
Starting in November, included cloud streaming hours will vary by Game Pass tier:
- Game Pass Ultimate: 15 hours/month ($22.99)
- Game Pass Premium: 10 hours/month ($14.99)
- Game Pass Essential: 5 hours/month ($9.99)
For context, 15 hours translates to about 30 minutes of gaming per day. Subscribers will have the option to purchase additional streaming hours once their included time runs out, although pricing details are still forthcoming.
Additionally, Microsoft plans to allow non-subscribers to pay for cloud streaming access to games without needing a membership. This move reflects wider industry trends and comes as the new Xbox CEO reevaluates the division’s business model, including testing ad-supported cloud streaming options.
