The United Nations has concluded that efforts to prevent severe global warming are failing, indicating the world is on track to exceed a critical temperature threshold. The new report from the United Nations Environment Programme suggests that rather than halting warming entirely, the focus should shift to limiting its severity and eventually reducing temperatures back below the globally agreed-upon limit of 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
While the Earth is currently nearing 1.4°C increase, scientists now expect a “peak” in warming around 1.8°C if significant climate goals are pursued. Without immediate action, the forecasted rise could reach 2.6°C by 2100. U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres emphasizes the urgency of addressing climate change.
The report acknowledges a coming period termed “overshoot,” where temperatures will surpass 1.5°C, leading to numerous environmental and humanitarian challenges, including extreme weather events, food shortages, and species extinction. It stresses the need for adaptation strategies for the worst impacts, particularly affecting vulnerable populations.
In the long term, strategies are proposed for cooling the planet, such as carbon dioxide removal, though these methods are controversial and may not be sufficiently reliable. Experts call for immediate and robust actions to mitigate climate impacts, but skepticism remains regarding the likelihood of effectively reversing current trends.
