Thelma’s Kitchen Temporarily Closes Main Space in Kansas City
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Thelma’s Kitchen has announced a temporary closure of its main location at 31st and Troost as leadership evaluates future plans. This initiative is part of Reconciliation Services, a nonprofit dedicated to providing meals and other support to those in need within the community.
Father Justin Mathews, CEO of Reconciliation Services, emphasized the organization’s long-standing commitment to the area, stating, “We have been dedicated to serving this community for almost 40 years.”
Continued Meal Availability
Although the primary space is closed, meals are still accessible. Community members can exchange Pay It Forward tokens for take-home meals at a different entrance of Reconciliation Services. Chief Operating Officer Kristen Harris reassured that these tokens remain valid during the closure. The organization serves nearly 4,000 people annually to ensure that those most vulnerable continue to receive nutritious meals and necessary services.
Seeking Community Input
Harris mentioned that the pause in operations is meant to reassess how to better serve local needs. They are actively looking to build upon their core mission and strengthen partnerships within the community. The main space is expected to reopen next year, although a specific date has yet to be established.
Reconciliation Services is also collecting public feedback through an online survey to inform their future strategy. Mathews affirmed that the core mission of Thelma’s Kitchen, as established by founder Thelma Altschul, remains unchanged, focusing on inclusivity across demographic lines.
