The University of Utah recently celebrated the opening of the Native Ascent House, a new initiative supporting Native American students and culture. Located near Fort Douglas, this program, part of the Center for Native Excellence and Tribal Engagement, offers a community for both native students and those interested in learning about Native cultures.
Tashina Barber, the program manager, emphasized the house’s inclusive environment, designed to foster cultural understanding and comfort for students transitioning to university life. Cliftene Duncan, a Northern Ute Tribe descendant, expressed how the Ascent House helped her adjust to college. Freshman art student Dowawisniok “Nimma” Groves highlighted the importance of cultural education from her parents, feeling supported in this new setting. Sky Woods-Billy, who always wanted to attend the university, revealed that the Ascent House influenced her decision, marking its significance in promoting cultural engagement.
This initiative aims to ensure that Native scholarship students gain valuable skills while embracing their heritage in a supportive environment.
