Labor Day Travel Surge in the Tri-State Area
As the Labor Day weekend approaches, the Tri-State Area is bracing for a significant increase in road traffic, with millions of drivers expected on the highways despite elevated gas prices.
Many travelers had already hit the road early Friday, aiming to reach their destinations ahead of the congestion. According to AAA, the most challenging hours for driving are projected between noon and 8 p.m., as the holiday getaway coincides with regular traffic patterns.
Currently, the national average for regular gasoline has risen to approximately $4.14 per gallon, a notable increase from $3.19 last year at this time. Nevertheless, many drivers expressed their contentment just to be on the move. Kevin Hunealt, a seasoned traveler, stated, “I’ve done this drive so many times. I’m used to it, getting up at one or two in the morning. I’m there by midday.”
Others, like Richard Witmer, have already faced some traffic challenges. He noted, “Coming through New York, it sucks. Going over the George Washington was pretty lousy, but it was good. Just be safe ’cause the cops are all over the place.”
In an effort to alleviate congestion, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced a suspension of temporary lane closures on state highways until 6 a.m. Tuesday. She also highlighted the participation of state police in the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, which will last through Monday, resulting in increased patrols and checkpoints across the region.
For those opting to fly, significant crowds are anticipated at airports, with over 17 million travelers expected to pass through TSA checkpoints nationwide. The Port Authority estimates approximately 2.4 million passengers will be processed at Newark, JFK, LaGuardia, and Stewart airports, placing this holiday season just shy of last year’s record numbers.
