Scientific Glassblowing: Tailoring Equipment for the Laboratory

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in western Germany features a specialized glassblowing workshop led by glassblower Daniela Einhardt and her team. They create and repair custom laboratory equipment by skillfully shaping glass at nearly 2,000 degrees Celsius. This workshop is essential for researchers, particularly chemists, who often require bespoke apparatuses that aren’t commercially available. The precision of the craft necessitates close collaboration between scientists and glassblowers, who must also possess a solid understanding of chemistry to effectively meet the researchers’ needs. This highly skilled craft is integral to scientific research and cannot be replicated by machines.
