Energy Abounds Within the MIHS Football Program

New Mercer Island High School (MIHS) varsity head football coach Mason Azose instills the mantra of “Earn It” in his players as they gear up for the new season. This philosophy has energized the Islanders as they prepare for their season opener at 7 PM on September 4 against Oak Harbor High School.
“The team is energetic and ready. There’s an excitement from the team and the football community that’s palpable,” Azose shared. He emphasizes the importance of earning everything, from wins and playing time to academic honors and respect within the Mercer Island community.
Senior captains Jonah Battema, Myles Mastalir, and Chase Kelly embody this spirit, exuding determination and enthusiasm as they look to lead their team into the season.
A Season to Remember
Battema, a wide receiver and outside linebacker, expressed his excitement for the upcoming games. “We’ve been working hard all summer, and I can’t wait,” said Battema, who is entering his third varsity season. He reflected on his team’s journey, having experienced an incredible 10-1 season as a sophomore, followed by a challenging 3-6 record last year.
“This taught us to work hard and push through adversity,” he said, brimming with anticipation for his senior year.
Mastalir, who plays linebacker and right guard, echoed his teammates’ sentiments about the energy at practice. “Everybody’s so excited to get started, I just can’t wait to play some games,” he said, feeling optimistic about the team’s potential.
Kelly, a wide receiver and cornerback, emphasized his positive experience with the coaching staff. “Coach Mason is an absolutely great coach… we’re really excited for our senior year,” he said.
