Downtown Sacramento Businesses Targeted in Series of Break-Ins

Nine Downtown Sacramento Businesses Burglarized in 24-Hour Spree

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A wave of burglaries swept through downtown Sacramento this week, affecting nine local businesses in just 24 hours. The incidents have left many business owners and customers feeling frustrated and concerned about safety in the area.

Details of the Burglaries

The burglaries occurred in various establishments, including well-known places like BevMo, Stillwater Sciences, Joneck’s Wine Lounge and Bottle Shop, East Village Bookshop, and Locked Barrel. Several businesses now face the significant expense of repairing boarded-up doors and windows.

Katie Kemp, a concerned customer, noted the impact on small, family-run businesses: “It hurts my heart… having to go through this kind of a challenge.”

Experiences of Business Owners

Renee Jones, owner of Joneck’s, shared her alarmed reaction to seeing live footage of a burglar inside her shop. Despite her attempts to scare him away via the surveillance system, the thief made off with valuable equipment and incurred damages estimated between $5,000 and $6,000.

At East Village Bookshop, employee Jalila Chehab reported a break-in where the thief quickly targeted the cash register, stealing several hundred dollars. “Now we’re just going to have to fix the door… it’s just sad,” she expressed.

Community Response and Concerns

Many business owners are frustrated with the lack of communication from local advocacy groups and law enforcement. Kemp highlighted the need for better transparency amidst these troubling incidents.

Law enforcement has yet to provide any suspect information, and outreach efforts to local business organizations like the Downtown Sacramento Partnership have gone unanswered.

Conclusion

As these businesses work to recover from the damages and thefts, there is a growing call for improved safety measures and support for the local community. The hope is to see a swift end to such troubling events and a return to business as usual in downtown Sacramento.
