Cummins is shifting towards a mechanical braking architecture with the introduction of wedge capsule engine braking for its 2027 X15, X10, and B6.7 Octane HELM engines. This system improves brake response time by up to 60% compared to traditional compression release designs, reducing the X15’s response time to below 100 milliseconds.
Key features of this system include a two-step mechanism that limits load transfer to approximately 30% during partial engagement, minimizing failure risks common with single-actuation systems. The elimination of hydraulic compliance enhances performance further.
Gabe Roberts, Director of Product Development at Cummins Valvetrain Technologies, emphasized that this technology meets OEM demands for rapid brake activation, which is essential for faster engine brake-assisted gear shifting. This development also simplifies integration as it removes the need for crank angle-based control.
The X15 is noted for having the highest total braking power in its class, while the X10 utilizes two capsules for both cylinder deactivation and braking. Additionally, the B6.7 Octane represents Cummins’ first gasoline engine application.
