New Curfew Policy for Independence’s SantaCaliGon Days Festival
Independence, MO — This Labor Day weekend, Independence will host its annual SantaCaliGon Days festival, introducing a 6 p.m. curfew for unaccompanied minors to maintain a safe, family-friendly atmosphere.
Festival organizers, including the Independence Chamber of Commerce, emphasized that this proactive measure comes in response to a national trend of disruptive teen gatherings at public events. Chamber President Valerie Byrnes stated that although discussions about the curfew began prior to recent incidents in neighboring communities, the curfew aims to help law enforcement manage potential disruptions effectively.
Byrnes clarified, “Nobody’s going to be carded. It’s really just meant to give law enforcement the ability to do their job.” The Independence City Council has approved this measure to address any large gatherings that might lead to unrest.
Independence Police Department public information officer Allyx McCoy called the curfew a “common-sense safety measure,” aimed at ensuring families feel secure during the festival.
This year’s SantaCaliGon Days will feature over 300 vendors and is anticipated to be a highlight of the local calendar, emphasizing community safety and enjoyment.

Local business owners have expressed their support for the curfew policy. Nanette Pickens, owner of Pickens Sweet Treats, remarked, “I think it’s fantastic… anything they want to do to make our city safer and more family-friendly.”
