The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, representing major automakers like GM, Ford, and Toyota, is urging Congress to implement legislation that would prohibit the import of Chinese vehicles into the U.S. by the end of the year. The group’s CEO, John Bozzella, highlighted concerns about Chinese automakers potentially flooding the market with subsidized vehicles equipped with advanced technology, emphasizing the need for immediate action to protect national security.
In July, the Senate Commerce Committee advanced legislation aimed at strengthening barriers against Chinese automakers, but the bill still faces challenges before final approval. Bozzella noted that enacting this legislation would send a strong message against China’s ambitions in the global automotive industry.
The Chinese embassy has opposed these U.S. efforts, while the legislation includes provisions that could affect partnerships with firms like Mercedes-Benz due to its investment ties with Chinese entities. Additionally, there are concerns regarding data security related to vehicles’ connectivity capabilities.
