In a survey, 84 participants rated 123 bird songs, emphasizing that varied, higher-pitched, and moderate-volume calls are deemed most pleasant. In contrast, barn owls received the lowest score at 1.32.
The research aims to explore the impact of birdsong on human mental health and promote conservation through aesthetically pleasing species. Notably, participants’ enjoyment of birdsong was found to be influenced more by personal taste than by specific bird knowledge. This suggests a fundamental connection between sound preference and the perception of a healthy, restorative environment.
A detailed examination revealed characteristics such as a narrow bandwidth and greater frequency complexity contributed to a song’s pleasantness. The study, conducted by the University of Tübingen and published in Frontiers in Bird Science, lays the groundwork for future research on the relationship between birdsong, biodiversity, and human well-being.
