University of Iowa Dedicates New Health Sciences Academic Building
Students, faculty, and community members celebrated the dedication of the University of Iowa’s new Health Sciences Academic Building on Wednesday. The event included addresses from five speakers, all emphasizing the significance of the new facility.
Facility Overview
The building accommodates three departments:
- Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders
- Department of Health, Sport, and Human Physiology
- Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science
Situated on the west side of campus, near UI Health Care, the impressive structure spans 265,000 square feet and features a modern design with large glass windows.
Student Impact
Home to over 2,500 undergraduates and nearly 400 graduate and doctoral students, the building is poised to enhance academic life. UI President Barbara Wilson expressed optimism about the opportunities the new space will provide.
“It’s going to transform the way we do the work we do,” she highlighted, noting the programs it houses will strengthen the university’s health curricula.
Amenities and Student Feedback
Speakers pointed out the extensive common spaces designed with students in mind. Second-year physical therapy students voiced enthusiasm for the new study areas, appreciating their closeness to classes and faculty.
Sophia Caronis, a second-year student, remarked, “We are able to be close to our classrooms and our professors.” Erin Crawford, another student, emphasized the value of the lab room for hands-on practice with new treatment tables.
The collaborative layout of the building encourages interaction among students from different health programs. Fourth-year student Audrey Haney praised the innovation and new technology available, especially in hearing tests, stating, “It really gives students whatever they need at the tip of their fingers.”
Inspirational Closing
Eric Hunter, the department executive chair for Communication Sciences and Disorders, concluded with a call to action: “Fill the building. Fill it with students, fill it with questions, fill it with collaborators. Because in the end, this building isn’t an investment in us. It’s an investment through us to the students that are going to come here.”
The new Health Sciences Academic Building stands as a symbol of growth and opportunity for the University of Iowa community.
